Chapter Fifteen

Levi felt this deep sense of déjà vu as he pulled up to Noah’s house on Friday morning. He hadn’t been by since he left last Sunday morning, and now that the flooring was done, there wasn’t any reason for him ever to go back—other than his feelings for Noah.

Oh, and this fishing trip.

But just as he started walking up toward Noah’s front door, it opened. “We’re ready. Look at me, being on time for once,” Noah said. He stepped out of the house wearing a bright green polo shirt and khaki shorts, with an Astros baseball cap on his head and a backpack slung over one shoulder. He held Pebbles’ leash with his right hand and a small crate in his left hand as they approached Levi. “Hi.”

“Hey there.” Levi reached out and took the crate from Noah and set it in the backseat of his truck as Noah settled in the front with the dog on his lap. She wore a pink harness with Adopt Me printed on the side. “Is she comfortable sitting up here like that?” he asked and pointed at Pebbles.

Noah snorted. “We’re good.” He scratched the dog’s nose and made a face as she sneezed. “Ew.”

Levi laughed, like he always did when Noah was around. “Okay, let’s go.”

The first few minutes of the trip they spend catching up. “How’s the family? Any good post-quinceañera gossip I need to know about?” Noah asked.

“Apparently a couple of kids from Jordan’s court got caught making out after we left,” Levi said.

“Escandalo.“ Noah murmured. “Can you imagine doing that at a quinceañera?” he asked, and cut his eyes at Levi, who just grinned as he felt his face get hot.

Yes, Levi could imagine doing that. “What about you? How’s your family?” Levi said, changing the subject as he adjusted his rear mirror. “Have you heard from your brother?”

Noah scowled and made a snorting noise. “Of course. He’s been sending the most beautiful photographs of the French countryside to the various chat groups that we’re both in. It looks like he’s having a wonderful time.“ Noah shook his head and sighed, then folded his hands in his lap. “Sorry. I guess I can be a real prick sometimes.”

“No, I get it. It’s hard with brothers.” Levi understood the animosity between them. Sometimes your brothers were your best friends in the world. Then they’d turn around and become perfect strangers in the blink of an eye. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I’m happy for him, I really am. It’s just—“ Noah waved his hand in front of him. “Sometimes it gets a little old, watching him be so damn cheerful.” He stared out the window. “I know that makes me sound awful.”

Levi shook his head. “It doesn’t. I mean, I understand—I know what it’s like to see your siblings happy and successful, and that feeling that you’ll never be as good as they are. But—“ Levi turned his head to look at Noah. “Yeah, Nolan has a boyfriend, but look at you.
